Alpha

 Introduction to the Alpha Course
The Alpha course is a 15 session, ten week practical introduction to the Christian faith. It is designed primarily for non-churchgoers and those who have recently become Christians. It was established at Holy Trinity Brompton over twenty years ago and there are now almost 24,000 Alpha courses throughout the UK and overseas. It is running in 132 countries and has been translated into 50 languages.

Alpha is a flexible and practical model which can work for any group of any size. Churches and Christian organisations of every background and denomination are discovering it to be a simple and effective way of presenting the gospel of Christ in clear and non-threatening manner to people from all walks of life.

 Alpha at LEC
Lightbowne Evangelical Church is based in Moston, Manchester, UK. Our Alpha initiative commenced on 25 September 2003 with the introductory talk on "Christianity: Boring, Untrue and Irrelevant?"

The normal format of the evenings took the following form:-

6:45pm Meal 7:30pm welcome 7:45pm Video (Talks by Nicky Gumbel) 8:30pm coffee 8:45pm Discussion 9:30pm Finish

The course took eleven weeks (which included an away day), and looked at all the basic teachings of our Christian beliefs e.g.

  • Who is Jesus?
  • Why did he die?
  • How can I be sure of my faith?
  • Who is the Holy Spirit?

We had two groups for this initial program one adult and one youth, with Debbie Budsworth, Nikki and Barry running the youth and Joyce, Gail and Alan the adult.

The adult group of about seven or eight people were manly Lightbowne folk who wanted to brush-up on the basics or just checkout Alpha to see what it was all about. All appreciated the course and derived some benefit from it.

The last course commenced on 15 January and ran until 1 April 2004 with an away day on 28 February at the Westwood Christian Centre, Slaithwaite. We have a nice balance this time between helpers and outsiders with up to a dozen attending each week. It's great to see the work that God is doing in the lives of these folk.

 Small Groups
We have recently started a special cell group for people who want to know more about being a Christian. It is aimed to people who have already been on one of our Alpha courses. There's more info in the "Small Groups" section of this web site.
 The Future
A Summer term is planned running from 29 April until 15 July 2004, the aim being that Alpha becomes an integral part of our church life and outreach, with those people who complete the course being integrated in to the fellowship, and going on to participate in follow-up teaching and the formation of house/cell groups.
