There is one last truth about the master Jesus wants us to understand. The
Lord of the Gift and the Lord of Settled Accounts is also the Lord of the
Reward. He has wonderful things in store for those who steward his treasures
wisely. Some aspects of what the master says are pretty much what we would
expect:
(v23)
"Well done, good and faithful servant". Imagine receiving this
commendation from God! Jesus continues to say at the end of
(v23)
"Come and share your master's happiness!"
But there is a surprise here as well. The master doesn't say. "Now you can
take life easy, you have earned it". No instead he says, "You have been
faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things". Now it
is time for you to get on with your real work! Remember the master had given
the servant an enormous amount of wealth. Yet he says, "You have been faithful
in a few things." Can this be true; that this great wealth more than any of
them had seen or imagined amounts to a few things? Yes - compared with what's
to come.
Take a moment to ask yourself....
- What is my deepest dream?
- How much passion do I experience in my daily life?
- What do I want my epitaph to say?
- How much am I growing these days?
- How often do I step out in faith for God?
- If I had to name "one true thing" that I believed I was set on this earth
to do, what would it be?
What has the Lord of the Gift given to you that you need to invest in the
kingdom? You may feel that, from a human perspective, what you have to offer
doesn't count for much.
The Lord of the Gift can take five fish and two loaves and feed the multitude.
The Lord of the Gift can take two mites given by an impoverished widow and make
it the lead gift in the whole offering. The Lord of the Gift can take a
stuttering fugitive named Moses and defy a world-dictator and his army. The
Lord of the Gift can take twelve bumbling followers and create a community that
has spread throughout the world.
God is surprisingly resourceful. He can take what you and I have to offer and
make a difference that matters for eternity. We have no idea what our potential
is, until we listen to Jesus voice and get out of the boat. For there is no
reward like the reward of the opened gift.
